Maleficent 2: How Disney reinvents the story of Maleficent and Aurora

The character of Maleficent continues to reinvent itself in a suite, whose trailer has just been unveiled.
After a first teaser, Disney unveiled the first trailer of Maleficent 2, in which the evil godmother Aurore will do everything to prevent the union of the latter with Prince Philip. The message of this trailer (see above) is clear, this suite will take us beyond the fairy tale. While some of the live-action adaptations of Disney classics like Aladdin, or the Lion King, remain largely similar to the animated versions, others are moving away from them. This is particularly true of Maleficent, who freely draws on Sleeping Beauty, herself a more romantic adaptation of Charles Perrault’s tale.

While in the cartoon the character of Maleficent is the personification of evil, in the live-action version it is the latter that ends up saving Aurora from the curse. From a monster capable of transforming into a dragon, Maleficent becomes a mother and her character becomes more complex. In this first trailer for Maleficent 2, she seems more than ever determined to protect Aurore, even to prevent it from knowing a potential beautiful love story. This relationship is also reminiscent of the unhealthy one that unites Rapunzel and the witch who removed her. Would Maleficent be right to be wary of Prince Philip and his family? It will be necessary to wait for the film to know it. However, these changes do not take away the character of Maleficent, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, who continues to shine with its strength and elegance.

She remains a powerful magical and charismatic being, capable of the worst as of the best, at the limit between the anti-heroine and the nasty classic. This is not the first time that Disney has detached itself from its initial animated production. The 2015 Cinderella film was inspired more by storytelling and gave Cinderella and Prince Kit common ambitions. More recently, Mulan, whose trailer has finally been unveiled, ignores the songs and some of the magical characters in the animated film, to refocus on the original Chinese story. By taking these liberties, while continuing to offer faithful live-action adaptations, Walt Disney Studios manages to reinvent its most famous characters. The offer is diversifying, and (almost) everyone can find his account.
