Black Spider-Man Far from the doldrums of its connected universe without tail or head, Sony has decided to put into production a live-action series centered on the Black Spider-Man of the 30s.
Sony Pictures’ handling of the superhero Spider-Man is a mystery to many. First, there was this first trilogy carried by the duo Sam Raimi / Tobey Maguire elevated to the rank of cult reference for the franchise (rightly, and this despite a third opus torpedoed by the studio). Then the reboot with Andrew Garfield, not stingy with visual ideas but stingy with script ideas. Finally, the character finally landed at Marvel Studios, but on loan, as part of a contract so complex that no one really knows all the ins and outs.
Except that Sony did not want to stop there. And, with the incredible success of Venom in 2018 ($ 800 million in revenue, it’s your fault if we are there), the studio decided to pursue in parallel with the Spider-Man franchise a connected universe centered on its villains.
And if the idea does not already seem brilliant on paper, it is clear that it is downright catastrophic in fact. Venom 2, Morbius, and soon Kraven or El Muerto (yes yes), the firm seems determined to rush into the wall headlong. Fortunately, in the midst of this slump, Sony has decided to complicate things even more with a third branch added to its universe. But this time, we’re not going to complain.
Black Spider-Man
Because the always very reliable Variety tells us today that the studio has decided to put into production a series around the character of Spider-Man Noir. It will be intended to land on the SVoD platform Amazon Prime Video (a competitor of Disney + by the way) and will indeed be live-action. The character will not be the same version as the one seen in the brilliant animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. However, the directors of the latter, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, will act as producers of the series.
Created in 2009, Spider-Man Noir is an alternate version of the weaver, originally from an Earth stuck in the 1930s. While a spider god offers him powers, he becomes a masked vigilante (and armed, which is quite unprecedented for a variant of Spider-Man) who goes to war against the underworld of this dystopian New York.
The character had gained great popularity at the time of the Spider-Verse crossover in 2014, the crazy multiversal story written by Dan Slott (which completely opened the doors of the multiverse for the animated film). Variety states that according to its sources, the main character should not be named Peter Parker (perhaps the story of a right with Marvel).
