Season 8 of Game of Thrones is underway and it is our last chance to know who is really behind the identity of the Night King. Thanks to the first episode of the season – watch out for spoilers if you have not seen it – there may be a new clue to unlock this mystery. The index in question is a symbol associated with the Night King that comes back regularly in the series, as can be seen in the tweet of a fan below. And we quickly notice the geometric resemblance between the spirals supposedly left by the Night King, and the shape of the three-headed dragon, emblem of the house Targaryen.
Did the first episode of Game of Thrones season 8 confirm that the Night King is a former Targaryen? This is certainly what some people think, already put on this track after he managed to climb on Viserion, a feat theoretically possible only for the Targaryen. There is no evidence, however, that the symbol is really related to the Targaryen, but we know at least that it is related to the Forest Children, as was confirmed by David Benioff some time ago. And since the symbol in question was present during the creation of the Night King by the Children of the Forest, we can suppose that it is intimately related to the first of the White Walkers too.
Its meaning is always a mystery but according to Beric, it would be in any case a message from the Night King. Unless it was the Night King who left the message, but the Forest Children themselves. From what Jon finds in the cave at Dragonstone and explains to Daenerys, the symbol would have represented the union of the First Men and Forest Children to fight the White Walkers. Originally created by the Children of the Forest to defend themselves from the First Men, they would have escaped the control of their creators and forced them to ally themselves with their former enemies to repel them. Maybe the Children of the Forest are still trying to get a message across so that all the living together in order to defeat the Night King. But in this case, would there still be a relationship with the Targaryen? We just have to wait for the next episodes on OCS hoping to have an answer.
