Officially under construction at Disney, the new live-action Aladdin 2 promises to be original and for that, it has a new scriptwriting team!
Did Disney finally understand the fans’ appeal? Accustomed to resuming its classic cartoons in live-action and reproducing them almost identically, it would seem that the studios have finally heard the many complaints from spectators and are ready to produce an original story. As for which adaptation would have the right to a suite, the choice of Disney quickly turned to Aladdin. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the first part had generated more than a billion worldwide box office receipts last year. It is therefore not surprising that the studios have bet on the Prince of Thieves in order to capitalize on the live-action, the producer Dan Lin having in the past teased the development of such a project and more or less confirmed the rest of the Disney movie.

Mena Massoud (Aladdin 2) and Will Smith (Le Génie) in Aladdin 2.
If it is not yet known whether its original cast of Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Will Smith will make a comeback, the production intends to develop an original story and has therefore hired new screenwriters. If the sequel was originally based on a cartoon, the studios are actually eager to provide an original narration, far from the animated sequel released directly on DVD in 1994 and entitled The Return of Jafar. They, therefore, recruited for this a new creative team, composed of John Gatins (Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton). If we still do not know everything about the screenplay, Guy Richie’s return to directing does not appear certain in the light of the mixed reception that Aladdin received last year, despite the success that the director is currently enjoying thanks to The gentlemen. The studios are actually awaiting the finalization of the script in order to start the production of the film. That said, this new live-action looks promising, when Disney finally seems ready to produce original stories!
