Review: Glass

Critical
Attention, this review contains spoilers …

After a long crossing of the desert, Mr. Night Shyamalan is back on the front of the stage thanks to The Visit, the especially Split whose post-generic scene had packed the long-time fans of the author-director. He now has the opportunity to give the Unbreakable 2 that he had been asking for so long in the form of a trilogy conclusion.

Prevention
Of course, it goes without saying that if you want to see Glass, I advise you to go see it blank of everything, because, as usual at Shyamalan, it’s better to enjoy the trip. So, from now on, I will spoil. You warned me.

The Shyamalan Crossover
Producing a crossover is not an easy exercise, as it involves bringing together figures appearing in different films. In this case, here Unbreakable and Split. As a result, Shyamalan escaped by abandoning the dimension horror film of the second. The Beast is no longer terrifying but appears more like a villain.

Remains the management of the various intrigues via the three (quite a relative number ?) main characters: David Dunn, the Horde and Elijah Price. Shyamalan cut his film in two parts, the first is dedicated to David Dunn and the second to Elijah. While the Horde lurks all the way.

Bruce Willis or the story of a missing talent
To my surprise, I got bored during the first one. I was constantly wondering what happened to my favorite actor in the 90s. Bruce Willis does not release anything. I have the impression that he is content to be there, recite his replies and cash the check. In view of his recent filmography where the DTV abound, I do not think I’m far from reality, but I hoped he made an effort for the continuation of one of his best films. The ultimate proof that he does not care anymore is when Shyamalan uses unused plans of Unbreakable for flashbacks. On these sequences, the great Bruce Willis is back.

American Super Heroes Story
Then comes the newcomer. The American Horror Story regular, Sarah Paulson, in the role of the insupportable (subjective point of view, obviously, one is in a criticism) psychiatrist, Dr. Ellie Staple. The character is written so roughly that I was shocked. Fortunately, the twist explains it. Finally, for an hour, I was there, but damn, get upset and show him that you are superhuman.

From then on, I totally escaped the intrigue of inducing doubts about the supernatural talents of the Horde, David Dunn, and Mr. Glass. Still this one, well, … But David Dunn, seriously? There is no doubt to have. Already, I do not even understand how the guy could stay so long without realizing his supernatural abilities. Like, you play football and you send the balloon for miles? As for the Horde and his “I crawl on the ceiling like Spider-Man” … No comment. Not to mention, the need to build special cells to contain them.

The emotion Kevin and Casey
In short, at this level, we have already exceeded half of the film. However, an unexpected element moved me and allowed me to stay in the story. The duo Anya Taylor-Joy and James McAvoy swing all the emotional moments of the film (with the Bruce Willis of the 2000s). And it’s a guy who has only moderately appreciated Split who says it. Big pleasure in finding the best personality, Hedwig.

Samuel L. Jackson or the story of  talent always present
The last part is the most punchy and the most pleasant to follow thanks to the intervention of the one whose title of the film bears the name. In a classic register of the film of superheroes with a bit of a twist and not very well staged (must swallow, the snake). It must be said that Samuel L. Jackson, unlike Bruce Willis, is still invested. This explains why one is always at the top, while the second is swimming in the lowlands. Too bad all the same that the twist in the twist is also predictable.

Action radius, obviously with a budget of 20 million. It’s hard. The uniqueness of place allows you to earn cash. For the rest, Shyamalan does in suggestion. This gives rise to really nice plans, but it ends up becoming boring to me. In addition, the fight David Dunn and the Horde … It was more embarrassing than anything else. It looked like two boxers trying to regain strength by surrounding the other.
